ANR's Mentor Mumblings Thread

[A New Room]

Here I shall post some of the basic things the mentor has to say. The aim of this is to make sure everything sounds good, but above all is crystal clear understandable if it were to be heard in game.

First Pack

Most, if not all of these need to be rerecorded, but I'll just keep them here for reference sake.

Basically a collection of DK1 phrases.

This pack contains:

1. A new room has been researched (3x takes, not sure which is better)
   
   
2. Game loaded
   
   
3. Game Saved
   
   
4. There is nothing left to research.
   
   
5. You cannot give your imps any more jobs (As well as alternate an phrase: Your workforce is over capacitated)
   
   
6. You do not have enough gold (4x takes, not sure which is better)
   
   
7. You have tunnelled into a new area
   
   
8. You must build a treasure room to store gold (2x takes, not sure which is better)
   
   
9. You need a bigger treasure room.
   
   
10. Your gold reserves are running low.

Feedback is much appreciated, as are rephrasing suggestions (Ie. Instead of saying "Your creatures are under attack" say "Your creatures have entered a battle")

I think the second take of "A new room has been researched" is the best one. The 4th take of "you do not have enough gold" is the best. 2nd "You must build a reasure room to store gold" Is the better one. These are just my opinions, of course. I think these are all really good, keep up the good work! However, some words could mbe emphasised more in a few of them, like the "You have tunneled into a new area!" And "Your gold reservers are running low".

I'm more of a fan of DK 2 mentor, but i have to say those are pretty damn impressive. Good work.

I think you need to get ANGRY before recording these. slapping yourself a few times might help.
You need to slow down, and not rush it (almost sounds like the audio is going faster and faster towards the end) - keep the speed consistent.

I also think you can even kinda Mumble some the stuff, if the voice sounds more angry/pushed - he isn't a perfect vocal guy, that mentor....he mumbles a lot but it sounds cool that way
(By mumbling, i mean......err........"not perfectly pronounced words")

The mentor is a demon thing after all...... (imo)



But you are DEFINITELY on the right track here mate, we ain't gonna get anyone better than you that's for sure


Is it possible to start some rough drafts on the spells? perhaps even make your own ones (random, cool sounding made-up words) too!
I would like to do the SoundFX Editing on the spells, I know exactly how they are made.

Spell Examples:
- Vortaris Imexiul
- Goro-pah na Khul'tos
- Torna-dool En-khartoo
- Lag zhool Eme-tay-os

That is a good point actually, I guess I still have the pacing of lines still constantly running through my head.

Hmm… I’ll give it a try, but I really don’t want it to sound too much like I’m not trying.

I’ll give it a shot though pronouncing some of those is going to be a bit of a challenge, but I think I'm up for it.

Yeah I kind of wish I had the agility to do a more DK2 style voice, but I would probably have to get vocal coaching to be able to speak that well :P

As For the mumbling, okay, I don't mean "mumbling", but the Mentor isn't 100% clear when he talks

He doesn't say " your dungeon heart is being attacked...."
He says" YOUR DN'GN HEART 'S BEIN' ATTACKED'

not "Your gold reserves are running low"
but "YUR GOWD RESERVES are running LOW"

he doesn't say "library" he says "LIBREY"

hope that makes sense? hehe



2 more things:
- your older "a new room has been researched" clip was perfect.
- it's not "Kranium Intel" - it's "Kranium (or whatever) INTERNAL"

it always sounded like "Bring New Internal", not that it makes sense, but this is what I mean, especially with the spells - he mumbles, and because you can't make out what he really says, makes it much cooler.


PS: Don't take my comments too harshly, just trying to help you get as close to the mentor as possible...

That is probably a pretty good idea, though my current recording set up wouldn't work very well with it, since my headset mic gets quieter the further it is from me. I'm looking into acquiring something better just so that I can record at a better quality, but for now I don't have enough funds to do so.

i'm not talking about the mic, just the $21 box thingy he made with foam...it's to eliminate that hollow sound caused by the room's walls, and background noises, like PC fans for example.




otherwise we could always ask steve jobs if we could borrow his?

I know, I suppose I could make a simple one and mean into it when I'm doing lines, or just put it on my head :P
