What are your top 30 games of all time? Games that enthralled you, games you look back upon memorably from your youth, games you idolize, games you absolutely love :D.

This is my list - and it really isn't fair to judge some above others because I love all of them.

Where the f*** are Diablo 1 and 2? And Warcraft 2 and 3 for that matter. Those games are legends among legends. (Well the Diablo legacy at least.)

At the moment the games I play in order of how much is:

1. Diablo 1
2. Minecraft
3. Dungeon Keeper 1
4. Amnesia: The Dark Decent (For Let's Play purposes only though. That game is way to scary to play for fun. :P)

And overall the games I like most:

1. Diablo 1 (Really awesome game, if you like DK1 you should like this one too. It's a RPG though.)
2. Dungeon Keeper 1
3. Minecraft
4. Half Life 2
5. L4D
6. Warcraft 3
7. L4D
8. Diablo 2
9. L4D2
10. Portal
11. Warcraft 2
12. GTA 2

And those are the only games worth mentioning, most other games were just a single playthrough and were left to rot on my hdd.
I did play WoW a lot when it first came out, on private servers though cause I hate to pay. But the games I played most would be Warcraft 3, Diablo 2 and L4D

Games I can't wait for?
Elder Scrolls 5 (I played 4 but I could not get myself into it, it was mad fun though.), Diablo 3 (That shit is awesome, big fan of the legacy.) and I hope to one day lay my eyes on a Warcraft 4, untainted by WoW which is an abomination. It killed the lore and a whole bunch of other good things about the warcraft legacy. Dota also ruined Warcarft 3, it's a shame.

Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time and Banjo Kazooie were amazing games. Never played them but I did watch playthoughs. Never really had consoles.
Last year I got myself a Wii and played Zelda Twilight Princes. Really awesome. Also played The Windwaker when I was a kid. I love the puzzles.

No, because posts like what I responded to are exactly the sort of posts that would provoke flamewars if left untouched.

Additionally, I recommend you to try to be a fun person, you're doing nothing but provoking more discussion on this subject here.

I agree with Mothrayas.

Opinions should definitely be considered potential flame bait and therefore have no place on our forum.

Of course, one could say that to contribute meaningfully to a thread entitled 'Top 30 Games of All-Time' an opinion is most definitely needed.

Otherwise, all you're doing, is clogging up the thread with your pointless, snide comments.

But those people would be fools, undeserved of a place within our community, and so I call upon our beloved admin, the almighty Dotted, to cast them out of our midst, Like God to Adam and to ensure that they never return to trouble us with these, most hated of ideologys', the Opinion.

As you were, chaps.

Airandius
March 1st, 2011, 00:54
Oh no it's an opinion, opinions are bad and are flame bait!
Really? Really? That's what we are doing?

I was going to reply, explaining what is wrong with what you and the newcomer said. But I've seen your posts and I can say with confidence that it would not have mattered.
Also, you were the one that provoked this entire 'war'.

*Sigh*

If we can't simply respect each other's opinions and stick to on-topicness, then I see little choice than locking this thread before a flamewar breaks out, maybe hand out a couple of infractions while I'm at it.

Last chance for this thread!

My favourite Game of all time is Dungeon Keeper 1 simply because I can play it over and over again and still be utterly entertained in my own little world.

Some other games that I play on a regular basis to this day are

Dungeon Keeper 2 (Still like it but not as much as the original)
Age of Empires
Banjo Kazooie
Banjo Tooie
Super Mario World (Snes)
Super Mario 64
Golden eye 64
Killer Instinct
Killer Instinct Gold

I've only just seen this thread so get read for my top 10*!

1) Diablo II - probably spent more time playing this game than all the others on my list combined. So addictive and great whether it's single or multiplayer.
2) Dungeon Keeper - unique. Can't beat its 90's charm, the immersive atmosphere, the brilliant creatures and heroes. Just such a good concept and very re-playable.
3) Half-Life - amazing storyline and gameplay. Crow-barring head crab zombies.. it can't get any better!
4) Age of Empires II - never a big fan of single player, but multiplayer with friends was brilliant.
5) Warcarft III - fantastic multiplayer, used to love playing custom maps such as DotA and castle defence.
6) Half-Life 2 - great storyline and at the time fantastic graphics. Ravenholm was f***ing intense!
7) Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II - a lot of sentimental value, I remember me and my bro figuring out how to get LAN multiplayer working for the first time with this game. It was awesome.
8) Red Alert - takes me back to my childhood. Used to love playing as the Soviets, mammoth tanks were gnarly mofos. Not such a big fan of RA2, never played RA3.
9) Dungeon Keeper 2 - not as good as the original, but certainly had its moments and definitely a lot of sentimental value. My love of multiplayer DK2 led to the creation of Keeper Klan!

Shockingly DK isn't top of my list, it was initially but then I started writing about Diablo II and realised I had to switch them round. I know there's loads of games I've forgotten and will probably remember immediately after posting. I've deliberately left out console games because they're a world of their own, but quickly: Mario Kart 64, Golden Eye 64, Time Splitters 2, Time Splitters 1, Pro Evolution Soccer 3 (PS2), Star Wars Pod Racing (N64) - those are what to come to my mind without going back to NES and SNES.

*10th left blank because I'm sure I can come up with a better one than what's in my head at the moment, will update when it's revealed itself to my consciousness!

In no particular Order, here are the games I find myself going back to regularly. Forgive my indulgence since some of them are less well known, I'll write more about it.

1) Baldur's Gate II : great game, great customisability. Just needs new plots to refresh, and possibly some graphic updates

2) Dungeon Keeper 1 & Deeper Dungeons : that's why I'm here

3) Romance of Three Kingdoms 3 : this is a very very old game. but it is simply.. wooh. Great replayability value. The later versions beyond 3 had the Generals play too big of a role, and becoming more unpredictable with their spells and what not, making it less strategic except to build your kingdom's strategies around generals abilities and growth

4) The Sims 1 (with all Expansion Packs) : I should probably try out the sequels, I heard they're better. but still, its a great game.

5) Dark Reign 1 : almost unheard of, it was an amazing pioneer in AI customisability in a time when there were only RTS games like Red Alert I, and Warcraft II was just very new. You could set your units to
- varying levels of Independence
- set Patrols on complex routes (think 6-8 points) and opt whether they patrol to-and-fro or circular
- unlimited Grouping Size
- priorities in engaging enemy : Search and Destroy (use with high independence and groups and they'll start wandering around), Pursue to a certain Radius, Immobile Guarding functions, and (I think there was) setting Retreat Points
- Terrain affected various types of unit passing by. eg. Infantry and Walkers can cross almost any land terrain including Ridges, but Tanks cannot. Hover infantry and vehicles (which may include special tanks) can cross all sorts of water but not ridges with high differences, Air Units could fly over all, etc.
- The special buildings and units were nothing short of amazing, with the "ultimate" units of (cheaper) Shockwave Tanks self-destructing to send out a ground based tsunami of damage, or (very expensive) Rift Creating Towers that could summon up Black Holes ANYWHERE on the Battlefield (you get a small warning when a small swirling black thing shows up and shortly later it expands) and would take time to recharge.
Unfortunately, the Storyline Sucked hugely and the Map Editor was difficult, making it having little or no replay value.

6) Starcraft / Brood War : Much later than Dark Reign, Starcraft took many of the best things of DR and combined with an absolutely Top-Notch Storyline & Voicing, and an intriguingly well balanced 3 sides considering that they were all so different. A totally amazing game, it came with a great Editor especially Script Wise, that could let you do literally almost anything, again only subject to a certain max limit of Script Events etc.

7) Diablo I & II with Expansion : Both were great games on their own. Diablo I was almost revolutionary, and had a great creepy feel to it throughout the whole game and very good cinematics. Diablo II lost a lot of ambience but in return gave a "world exploration" feel, combined with a hugely better storyline, great cinematics, extremely unique Classes and multiplayer modes. Both games gave random map generation as well, pretty awesome.

8) World of Warcraft : it was great when it came out with very interesting classes (although not well balanced initially) and went into truly awesome with amazing panoramas, various expansions in interactivity and questlines by TBC / WotLK. Sadly, I've no time to keep up with Raiding anymore, making further gaming pointless.

9) Doom I & II (with all expansions) : A pioneer FPS shooter with a huge variety of monsters and ingenius (if not utterly devilish) level design. It is really one game, since Doom II is almost the same as Doom I, just with more monsters and more levels. From the original FPS Wolfenstein 3D to various other gimmicky 3D shooters since, Doom broke through to set the tone for turning FPS shooters into more realistic, gory and adult graphics, excellent Multiplayer Gameplay, and gave such a good illusion of "3D" (Doom maps weren't really 3D) that it set the stage for predecessors in such "realistic" graphics and true 3D maps, like Duke Nukem 3D, and the line which became possibly the most hallmark games of the FPS genre - Quake, followed by Half-Life / Counterstrike and Unreal. Doom was also the first FPS to have a great following in Graphics editing, Map Editing and Hacking, such that many later FPS games eventually had released Map Editors.

10) Counterstrike - Counterstrike beats Half-life simply because of its great Multiplayer, which is much better than Half-Life's multiplayer.

11) Heroes of Might & Magic 2 : I've actually only played 2 and 3. But what can I say? So simple, so elegant, yet so intriguing. And some of the expansion Campaigns really made me sweat and rethink my whole game. The maps had potential to be very beautiful, I may have a map of Ansalon/Krynn (Dragonlance world) that I did for HOMM 2. HOMM 3 was less liked by me, but that's a personal taste. Semi-3D graphics in a non-3D environment doesn't do it for me.

12) Master of Orion 2 : Never played 1, but this was unique concept, astounding gameplay. My only grouse was that it was too easy once you knew what to research and if you used diplomacy and race customisability to your advantage. I loved the Space ship fights and the strategy involved in keeping out of their front-arc (usually combined with Boarding to seize their Tech)

13) Carmaggedon : Wow someone else actually posted about it here! But I guess this is a Keeper's forum after all :) What can I say, I love Stadiums!

14) Worms 1 & 2 : amazing, just amazing. So easy to customise too. Amazing. a campaign might have been good, but that might have spoiled the easygoing feel of the game.

15) Age of Empires 2 : I never played 1, but this was really good...

16) Warcraft 1,2,3 : again, pioneer RTS with great gameplay, but most of all a very engaging storyline. Very customisable as well. Warcraft 3 really broke out with the introduction of Heroes and the much faster build pace (or maybe cuz I was picking up Multiplayer)

17) Civilisation II : was a good game for its time.

18) Magic the Gathering : Shandalar : I never played the cardgame itself, but the computer game was fun. I still play it occasionally when I'm bored, or I customise a deck and play.

19) Vampire the Masquerade : Redemption : I love the atmosphere of the game, and the unique factor of a storyline that spans across 2 different ages, from the classic Medieval / Fantasy with Sword & Shield in Europe setting to crossing over to the modern Guns, Rifles, Rocket Launchers etc in New York. It doesn't sound like it makes sense, but it really does :) The story is nice but too draggy / wordy at times. The Levels are customisable, and the Stats definitely. Unfortunately the Events are a fair pain to script, making alternate storylines all but impossible to set up for yourself and others (unless you play as a "Live" storyteller). I probably should try the sequel...

Can't think of anymore. Have played other games but they don't make this sort of impression.

In order of most play-throughs &/or love (love values are approximate)
Grim Fandango [Easily #1]
Monkey Island(s).
Diablo & Diablo 2 (+ LoD)
Psychonauts
Starcraft 1 & 2 (combined)
Dungeon Keeper 1 & 2
Mario Franchise (anything pre-n64).
Portal 2 (Portal 1 for the idea, portal 2 for improved storytelling & gameplay)
Mario Tennis (N64)
Half-Life, Half-Life 2
Hidden:Source (HL2 Mod)
Braid & Limbo (combined because they're the same basic game).
Deus Ex
KoToR
Worms: Armageddon
Dance Dance Revolution (Arcade)
Warcraft 3: TFT (mostly customs)
Heavy Rain (It's pushing the industry in the right direction)
Socom 2 (PS2 -- I played this game way too much).
Team Fortress 2
Amnesia: Dark Descent
Fable 2
Shogun: Total War (probably deserves to be higher as I loved this game, but the campaign always crashed on me)
Age of Empires II

That's the shortlist off the top of my head, I'm positive I have neglected some games that are very dear to my heart. Oh well.

Fun thread!

Grim Fandango! I remember playing the demo from PC Gamer when it came out. It's absolute mystery why I didn't buy the full game, I'll have to rectify this after my exams.

Also, how could I forget Worms! Armageddon was sick, but my heart lies with Reinforcements. I have Worms 3D for PS2, always a good crack with mates round.

Can't buy it anymore (amazon.uk might have some copies?) but it's fairly easily available via torrent sites -- make sure to patch it (just google Grim fandango + patch) ;)

It's great if you' love classic SCUMM games like Day of the Tentacle, Maniac Mansion et cetera. It's the best. :)

I highlighted some games, that I found myself surprised to pop on to the list. (Not because they are bad, but because they are surprisingly good, or that I almost forgot about em) eventhough I spend a long time thinking about this topic.

That would be a very cold love then, seeing as the glasses are blue, not red :p

What are your top 30 games of all time? Games that enthralled you, games you look back upon memorably from your youth, games you idolize, games you absolutely love :D.

This is my list - and it really isn't fair to judge some above others because I love all of them.

My own list:

1&2: Doom 1 & 2 (Easily my most absolute favorite game of all time, and don't get me started on Doom 3. That game is a piece of shit. This is my review at gamerevolution.com: http://www.gamerevolution.com/mreview/pc/doom-3/Richardc269. And yes, the review is very condescending, which is the way I meant it to look like! :D Doom 3 was such a huge disappointment. It went back to the store only after a couple hours of playing it. That's how disgusted I was with Doom 3)
3&4: Diablo 1 & 2 (I haven't played D1 in years)
5: Dungeon Keeper 1 (I don't like DK2 at all)
6: Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit (The old one, not that sack of shit new one)
7: Need For Speed: High Stakes (Love this game)
8:Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed (This one's awesome. I think the new "street racing" NFS's are boring as a turd and are lame. I hate street racing, it's an idiotic concept)
9: StarTopia (Just started playing this, and it's pretty cool. Wish they made a #2)
10: The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind (Awesome game!)
11: The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion (I absolutely love this game, even though I haven't played it in months. I loved exploring the abandoned forts and ruins. Making money in this game was seriously easy. lol.)
12: The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim (I really like this game so far. Minus the crap UI these people obviously put no thoughtful planning into)
13: Star Trek: StarFleet Command 3 (Awesome game with mods)
14: Grand Theft Auto 3 (I really did not like San Andreas, I honestly couldn't care less about some wannabee black gangster idiots)
15: Red Faction (The first one was pretty good)
16: Carmageddon (Absolutely LOVE this game! Haven't played it in a couple years or more)
17: Carmageddon 2 (Love the 2nd one even more than the first one. I played it A LOT! TDR2000 was lame ass)
18: Civilization 4 (This one's fun for a while, but I'm more into expanding on the map, and with no other players)
19: Quake 2 (Played this. Was fun.)
20: Battlefield 2 (Love this game)
21: Battlefield 2142 (this one's fun, too.)
22: Half-Life (Loved the campaign and all of it's expansions (Opposing Force, etc)
23: Stronghold (Loved this game. Didn't really like SH2/3)
24: Star Wars: Empire At War (This one was very fun)
25: Star Wars: Forces of Corruption (Even better than EAW in terms of gameplay)
26: Mount & Blade: Warband (This one's very fun to play with online multiplayer mods)
27: Baldur's Gate (One of my favorites. I did not like BG2)
28: Unreal Tournament (This game was very, very fun to play back in the day)
29: Unreal Tournament 2004 (This one was very fun, too!)
30: StarCraft/Brood War (Was very fun to play for years, but I finally got bored with it. I do not like SC2)
31: Galactic Civilizations 2 (this game's pretty fun, though I don't play it very much)
32: One Must Fall: 2097 (Absolutely love this game. OMF Battlegrounds is a sack of shit)
33: HomeWorld (Awesome game)
34: HomeWorld 2 (Yet another awesome game. Even better than the first with good mods. There was even a StarWars mod for it. You could buy/create so many ships, and the research section was good, too! I didn't really care for HomeWorld: Cataclysm, even though I did play it quite a bit)
35: WarHammer 40K: Dawn Of War (Awesome game for a 2003/2004 release. It had awesome graphics for its time)
36: WarHammer 40K: Dark Crusade (Loved this game, too. Didn't really care for SoulStorm all that much)
37: Dungeon Siege: Legends of Aranna (Both DS2&3 are absolute shit)
This is about all I can think about right now.

I never really did get into WarCraft 3. It honestly looked like it was made for children instead of Teens/Adults. They did an absolutely abysmal job with making it look like a bad 3D Cartoon bullshit. That absolutely ruined it for me. I won't even bother touching Diablo 3. There's not going to be any singleplayer. That it'self is making me boycott Blizzard. Their company turned into a well used, unflushed toilet ever since the original team that created D2 left the company to create Flagship Studios. The only thing I liked about WC3 was their little videos, even though they were too short. I never had the chance to play WarCraft 1 or 2. I'm told "StarCraft: Ghost" for the console was a poor attempt.

EA Games also used to be a good company back in the day when they were making the early Need For Speed games. But their company turned into absolute shit after they finished creating Porsche Unleashed (That's Porsche 2000 to the UK). Now-days, the only 3 things EA Games and Blizzard Entertainment care about anymore, is money (emphasis on money, seeing as they bought out so many PC game creation companies that the courts actually threatened to sue them due to making themselves a monopoly (though I'm not entirely sure on that), Anti-Piracy shit that isn't exactly effective, and anti-cheating. Everything else they'll say "Get lost". One example of this, is Nascar Season 2003. Just after they bought out Sierra, they stopped the support for Nascar 2003, and the multiplayer was basically cut away. In Nascar 2003 multiplayer, you had a rating on your ability to race. They only stopped this because it was old, and they honestly didn't care about their Nascar fanbase. So EA Games...fuck you, assholes.

Edit: I'd just like to add that these games in this list are not in any particular order. They're just favorites.

Edit: I'll apologize if any of my cursing offends anyone, I'm not in a pissy mood or anything, it's just that I prefer speaking my mind/the truth.

My personal favorites are.

DK1 & 2. I like 2 a bit better due to a slower, but more organized pace. Also felt more strategic since in DK1 you could literally turtle til the end of time if you wanted. But DK1 is a gem too, sometimes I prefer the more chaotic nature.

TES Morrowind. If it wasn't for this game taking the massive jump into the 3D world. We might have never seen Oblivion,Skyrim, or even Fallout 3 and New Vegas. I don't play it anymore but I have the best memories of this game.

Age of Empires 2. This game in my opinion is the best RTS around. It just worked so beautifully and was just a blast. Some will swear that Starcraft is god, but I hate that game. Empire's Earth tried to have a feel like AoE but never could pull it off. I can always go back to AoE 2 and have a blast while I often uninstall EE fast due to how boring the game gets. Build some siege and a lot of ranged units and you can kill just about anything. And don't even get me started on the nuke planes... AoE it wasn't as easy to do this since everything had a counter.

Age of Empires 3. I only recently started playing this game and it is very fun as well. Not on par with AoE 2 but still very entertaining. I am a bit disapointed how they reduced number of resources to just a mere 3, vs 4 in 2 but that is just a minor gripe.

Twisted Metal. Ohh the memories I have with this game. I remember when I was a kid and got my very first console, the PS1. My brother got me this and I was in love with the game. Nothing is more fun then destroying your enemies from ramming them, machine guns, missiles, to specials such as shooting a nuke or being in a dump truck and picking cars up and smashing them into the ground repeatedly. I feel this game was amazing, and it saddens me how the newer games just....let's just say they lost that touch. This wasn't a game you cared about story, you were in a tourney to kill, have fun.

And my all-time favorite. Metal Gear Solid series. Words simply can't define this game. Sure some will get turned off how the later games, like 3 and 4 had a crapton of cutscenes, some have taken to call MGS4 an interactive movie which makes me chuckle. But these games were absolutely beautiful. There hasn't been much in the way of stealth games, but this series did it and did it perfectly. Sure you could run in and gun everyone down, or you could tranq everyone and waltz to wherever you please. You could be a true sneak and never get seen. There was many ways you could play the games. No alerts, no kills or knockouts(other than the obvious parts that are unavoidable like bosses or enclosed areas that force you to wipe out whoever is there with you.) This game just was a masterpiece. And I look forward to MGS5 when it comes out! And please, PLEASE don't mention Metal Gear Rising.......I hope that game gets forgotten, it is a disgrace to the MG name.....

My favorite games are(no order):

Dungeon Keeper 1 - that´s why I´m here ;) . I never liked DK2 tbh.
Warcraft 1+2 - some of my first games that brought me into RTS. Never liked WC3 and WoW. Someone else mentioned he didn´t like the comics looks - me too. Also the whole storyline sucks IMO. I want orcs to be fierce warriors, not some hippie-like weirdos. It´s also sad they cancelled the Warcraft adventure.
Gothic 1 - part 1 ist still the best and IMHO one of the best RPGs
Spellforce - was a nice mixture of RPG and RTS. Didn´t like part 2.
Thief: The Dark Project - the first and IMHO still the best stealth game. Thief II: Metal Age was also great. Thief III was a disappointment and now seeing the reboot...bah.
Diablo 1 - IMHO still the best part of the series, best atmoshphere and soundtrack. Diablo 2 was a bit too tedious and Diablo 3 too casualised
Legend of Kyrandia series - great adventures. Wish there would be another part. But as EA killed Westwood I doubt there will be one.
Inherit the Earth: Quest for the Orb - also a great adventure. Still waiting for the next part.
Carmageddon - another game series where part 1 is IMHO the best.
Wacky Wheels - still fun to play today
Worms series - IMHO Worms 1+Reinforcement are also still the best because of their dark atmosphere. Worms 2, World Party and Armageddon were also fun for a while but I liked the original design of worms and landscape ways more than this comic look. Still better than the 3D crap.
Lords of the Realms 2
Lands of Lore series - well, 1 was a nice classic, 2 looked in parts a bit silly due to actors that where put into the games world but it still was ok. 3 was not really finished and feels a bit silly overall. I guess we will not see a next part thanks to EA killing Westwood
Postal 2 - sick and funny
King´s Bounty(the new series from Russia) - one of the few games from the last years that I like. Nice graphics and soundtrack, interesting stories and good gameplay
Microsoft Train Simulator - with all the addons fun for a lot of hours
Jazz Jackrabbit - another classic, part 1 better than 2. I have to say I miss jump & runs like these today.
Age of Empires 1 - IMHO 1 is the best of the series, the others are ok, but hadn´t the atmosphere of the first
Painkiller - I´m not that into shooters but this was one I liked.

Overall I liked the games from the old days more than these from today. Today it´s mostly about graphics, casualisation and compatibility for consoles.

Some games had interesting ideas but failed to impress me then. Overlord is one good example. The comparison to DK is BS, only similarity is that the player is evil and has a mentor but otherwise it´s a totally different game. Anways the idea to control these goblin-like minions is nice but the controls were often a pain. Also it felt more like an interactive film than anything else as you could only walk predefined ways guided by the mentor who becames a bit annoying later. Too sad that part 2 made the same mistakes.

I also like TES: Oblivion and Skyrim, but the main storyline is not that thrilling and after a while it becomes repetitive. I also don´t like it that in Skyrim one can become a noble fighter, ruthless assassin, thief and a mage even if the character don´t has any better magic skills all at the same time making you not feel that you play a role.

given different criteria you can have different options ! one of the most important factors in mind when thinking about such questions is age - what is my age (https://www.quizexpo.com/how-old-am-i-age-calculator/) - which the game was intended to play. but my of all time and age favorite game is world of Warcraft

8:Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed (This one's awesome. I think the new "street racing" NFS's are boring as a turd and are lame. I hate street racing, it's an idiotic concept)

On your list, I would highlight this particular game. Wonderful development of the game from the old, rare Porsche models, to the brand new ones. A great game!

My first choice Definitely Counter Strike
