48/2(9+3) = 2 ?

48/2(9+3) = 2 ?
:D
48/(2(9+3)) = 48/((2*9)+(2*3)) = 48/(18+6) = 48/24 = 2
Alternatively, (48/2)(9+3) = 24(9+3) = (24*9)+(24*3) = 216+72 = 288

so whats the answer then mr smarty pants?

The answer isn't 2, but 288.
Since multiplication and division operations are of the same priority, we must do them from left to right:
1. Parentheses (always first) : 48/2(9+3) = 48/2*12
2. Division : 48/2*12 = 24*12
3. Multiplication : 24*12 = 288
Nothing much to say. :D

but the answer IS 2, lol...
2 * 3(6+6)
the 3 takes precidence, and should be done with the brackets before multiplying it with 2.

order doesn't matter if you're multiplying.
also the anwser is 288 from the first one and 72 from this one
from the first one, you said this

According to Bimdas as I was taught; (Ed. or as my memory retained?)
48/2(9+3) (Brackets first)
=48/ (2x12) - added brackets for ease of reading. (No inidicies, thus multiplication)
=48/24 (Division, but no addition or subtraction, so...)
=2
I was always taught that Bimdas was followed to the letter (damn I'm funny) but I have googled it and Dragonslover's point, that multiplication and division have equal priority and thus left to right is followed, was immediately backed up.
My mother is a maths teacher, though, so I might ask her tomorrow morning if it 'tis equal or weighted priority. But the catch there is different countries use different stuff.
Edit: I can confirm that there is no priority, so it is not weighted as I believed. So I cede to Mothrayas and Dragonslover.

As multiplication and division shared the same priority you simply have to calculate from left to right, meaning it can only be 288
Where it to be 2, you would have to write it as such: 48/(2(9+3)).
48/2(9+3) will never equal 2.
48/2(9+3) (Brackets first)
=48/ (2x12) - added brackets for ease of reading. (No inidicies, thus multiplication)
=48/24 (Division, but no addition or subtraction, so...)
=2
I think you accidentally the brackets.

Yeah 288.

I just emailed this problem around my office to se how people approached it, almost a 50 50 split between those who answer 2 and those who say 288. I did the sum before reading on in the thread and came up with 288 based on the same working that Dragon lover displayed.

Math is just stubborn when it comes to simplicity. And brackets are cunning.

If I approach this using BODMAS which is what Scottish people are taught, I do:
48/2(9+3)
48/2x12
24x12
288

288. Dotted is corrent, the correct order to calculate an equation is:
-Terms inside of brackets
-Exponents and roots
-Multiplication and division
-Addition and subtraction
Since priority is shared, the outcome is 288.
On that note, lets see if we can continue on this line of thought.

See if you can figure out 32²÷2(6x12)+50(18÷9)

Well just let me know Where are you getting 2 as the answer from?
The number before the brackets takes precendence. That makes 48/2*9+2*3. Which is 24*9+6 = 216+6=222.
