Edit: much simpler instructions in the post following this one.
--------

In case some more nostalgia-seeking noobs like me come wandering in, I thought I would put the contents of this helpful post here. https://www.gog.com/forum/dungeon_keeper_series/dungeon_keeper_gold_game_editor/post3

What you need:
A. A working version of Dungeon Keeper 1 (obviously ;-)
B. Original Bullfrog Map Editor (dkedit.zip)
Unfortunately Electronic Arts "cleaned" its FTP server, hence the original download from Bullfrog is gone. Here are some alternative sources:
C. Decompression software like WinRAR or 7zip
D. Dungeon Keeper 1 Demo
- http://www.moddb.com/games/dungeon-keeper/downloads/dungeon-keeper-demo
- http://download.cnet.com/Dungeon-Keeper-demo/3000-2119_4-10011780.html
- https://drive.google.com/open?id=1g_JUNAEt2ei1HdF5OiWI1QxaIBAsoKLw

How-to:
1. Install Dungeon Keeper and don't use the KeeperFX patch as the Original Map Editor won't work with those files
2. Getting the editor files
- The editor installer (dkedit.exe) doesn't work with the GOG version, hence you have to extract the editor files manually
- You can extract the files from dkedit.exe with WinRAR (editor.exe, Data folder, Levels folder etc.)
- If you extract the .exe-file with 7zip, you'll get a file named _cabinet, among others. You can open this _cabinet with 7zip and inside you'll find the files and folders of the map editor. Extract all of them.
3. Copy all the files and folders of the editor directly into the GOG's Dungeon Keeper directory (usually "\Dungeon Keeper Gold"). editor.exe and keeper.exe should now be in the same folder.
4. The editor needs some DLLs to run, that are missing in GOG's version
- Extract the Dungeon Keeper Demo and run the SETUP.BAT
- This will extract all demo files
- Now copy MSS32.DLL, SMACKW32.DLL and WSND7R.DLL into GOG's Dungeon Keeper folder (so that they are in the same folder as editor.exe).
5. Edit KEEPER.CFG in your game's directory
- Open the file with a text editor, e.g. Wordpad or Editor
- Fill in the game's path at INSTALL_PATH= (e.g. INSTALL_PATH=C:\Gog-Games\Dungeon Keeper Gold)
6. Done. Run the editor.

If you run into problems, try running the editor as Administrator and also in Compatibility Mode for the oldest Windows available (the program was designed for Win95).

Simpler instructions with all the needed files already extracted and in one place:

1. Download this archive https://drive.google.com/open?id=1HaIv-52brsJffNoHlfKUMErIk5Nil6oL

2. Do not use this in your KeeperFX folder. Extract the archive into your original version of dungeon keeper game folder

3. Edit KEEPER.CFG in your game's directory
- Open the file with a text editor, e.g. Wordpad or Editor
- Fill in the game's path at INSTALL_PATH= (e.g. INSTALL_PATH=C:\Gog-Games\Dungeon Keeper Gold)

4. Run the editor. If it won't work, try running the editor in Compatibility Mode for the oldest Windows available (the program was designed for Win95), and maybe as Administrator.

Extra: if you want to avoid the super fast tooltip texts when your mouse is hovering over things, put this file in the data folder (which will replace the old one -- you might want to rename the old one first so that you can go back to using it in-game). https://keeperklan.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=677&d=1297729078

I've always wondered, how do you place a pickable trap using official editor? I always just copied the tile slot from another map

That's one of the many things you can't do with the official editor. For stuff like that, use Adikted.

But Adikted can't place barrels, chandeliers and bottles :(

Sure it can. Adikted can place those and lots of things the official editor can't.

press i in thing mode

Yes. That was done in the image I uploaded: That's thing mode.

You can make action points there, chickens, traps, trap boxes, dungeon specials, and many things more, but no barrels or chandeliers.
The torch just builds a wall torch, I see no way to change that into a chandelier.
For creatures there is a separate menu, but non for barrels, bottles, chandeliers.

Indeed, if Adikted could place barrels, they would be found in thing mode, but they are not there.
Conclusion: Adikted can not place barrels.

If Adikted can place barrels, please tell me how.
I've build several maps in Adikted already, published them also, I'm not a noob on the topic.
Although, I could be over viewing something:If so, what must be pressed in thing mode to place barrels, chandeliers, bottles?

It's clear to everyone, these will not be found in slab mode, column mode, or script mode.

Conclusion, you cannot read.

He said, in thing mode, press i. There you get the list to place barrels and what not.

Okay, found it.
Only these bottles, available in 3 colors in the official editor, are missing there.

Nothing is missing. The bottles are there too. Look at 34~36.
