I think this was a good decision as it gives the dev team more creative freedom and legal invulnerability whilst ensuring Dungeon Keeper stands alone in its unique and unadulterated state.

Having commenced the War for the Overworld project all those years ago, I would've been completely against commercialising it. However, it won't be using the original DK IP and if the team who have put a hell of a lot of time and effort into developing it decide this is the right decision then there really isn't much to argue about. Both these points do, however, put WftO's status on the KK forum into question though. Should a purchasable game that is increasingly holding less similarities to Dungeon Keeper hold such a prominent place on the forum if any at all?

Dungeons? That will undoubtedly be less like DK then WftO, its a passable game to boot, yet we reserve a place.

Why did you make the decision for EA?
You could've gotten a yes and actually gone through with a Dungeon Keeper 3!
If you had gotten a no you could have made a different game with the same mechanics anyway.
I'm not sure what a Dungeon Keeper-esque game looks like..

If we were to get refused permission, it’s very likely EA would put a stop to this project altogether and we would have to shut everything down and lose all progress and work put into the game. This is something we would never want to happen.

Believe? You didn't try! How likely is a C&D? Would it happen if I sent an email to them with a link to this project? Probably not.

Not too unlikely (that is just an example)

Depends on if it would get through to EA, which, knowing EA, isn't all that likely. There have been attempts to contact them before.

EA would only be in it for the money. Its hard to get in contact with the permissions department of EA, as they dont ever respond - KK have been trying for years. (and i doubt their existance)

    Awesome.

For commercialization, have you guys considered things like donations, kickstarter, microtransactions? Personally, I like the model used by the humble indie bundle (or Radiohead did it earlier) with the "pay what you want" system. It's still indie, essentially free, but you can still make enough profit.

Also, this makes my thread about keeping too much DK things extremely useless. :P

I'd apply for 3D artist (I can model, texture and animate), but I'm not that good and I'm extremely busy with school. It did lead me to notice that your Jobs page still requires knowledge of DK and knowing how to use it's style, might want to check that page.

I'm afraid that I agree entirely.

It may seem that, having just registered, it's a bit cheeky for me to be commenting. But I've been lurking for about 18 months - returning every Sunday to see what new posts there were.

I've seen WftO cited as a better option for people who want to start a project. I've seen people who've started something already being encouraged to move their efforts to WftO. I MUST note that I don't know if any of those people actually joined the WftO team or not, but that's not really relevant ... the point is that the project is now no longer a DK game, and given the pretty strong hint that it's going commercial, it's no longer appropriate for it to be here - potentially diverting resources from the goal of a Fanmade DK.

I think it's pretty stupid to say we don't have a place here when really we are a spiritual successor. If people are looking for a DK game, they're going to find everything they want in our game and more. Heck, we certianley have more of a place here than dungeons does, and dungeons has a section on the forum
