Thumbs up Unreal Engine 3 now free to use for non-commercial projects

Today the Unreal Development Kit (UDK) was released making it possible to create standalone games using Unreal Engine 3.

Of course it's questionable if one could use it for a DK-like game, though the idea is quite exciting. Bluto's models could be used with extreme details
Nevertheless it's a great opportunity for fan projects out there. Maybe other developers like Crytek will follow this path

It just seems so overwhelmingly huge.
Has anyone experience with making UT mods, is it easy to handle?

Unreal Tounament 2 uses the *.obj format. These models are easy to make in most 3d software or in text format. I only know unreal 2, and the bots are scripted there, so it would be possible to let them come from a portal, instead of residing in a room, and spawning on certain places.

I´m not sure wether the rooms can be scripted there, that must be build to spawn new bots. I don´t know any part in the Unreal Engine, where you can as a player adapt the rooms there. There is many games that do that though, I´m not sure what the names are for a game where you build, or a game where you only handle bots, as only one of the computer players does in the Dungeon Keeper game, the one that only replaces creatures. From what I know from Unreal Tournament, no connection is found between bots and the place where they are. Only weapons.

Unreal Tournament is a Duke Nukem clone.
I know an editor for that. Much fun, to build in 3d, as opposed to Dungeon Keeper, where verything is 2D. Would be fun to dig upwards to a hero castle or village, or downwards to a next level...

    Yeah! Just think!

Use a completely different engine and try your best to learn the code.

Screw how easy it is to code things into your own engine. This 4+ year old engine is worth the hassle!
