    Default Trouble with dk2 Mapper

    Hello
I have got any questions to the DK 2 Mapper:

    1.
What does the symbols in the magenta frames (i have drawn the frames) mean?

    in the pictures 2-7:
    -I know the Heart-symbols are the dungeon-hearts
-i think the word "mana" means the holes in the ground, where mana-energy comes out
    Is it right?
Is the letter "P" the portal, where creatures come out to live in the Dungeon?

there is a neutral (withuot owner) dungeon hart possible.
what happens, if I placed it in my scenario and my creatures reached it?

    3.
I have got the "DK2mapper.exe" and the "DK2mapperGui.exe" in the same folder.
But if i try to compile my map, in the Box, that pops up, there appears only one file, not 6...
And if i try to make a thumpnal of my map, there comes a box "Error Making Thumbnail File"...
What must i do th make ti work?

    4.
Does DK2 accept a single player-scenario where the player is keeper 4?
Because my favorite color is yellow and the things and creatures of keeper 4 have got yellow markings.

    5.
Does DK2 Accept a mission with only one Player and without enemies?
I want to create a scenario without fighting, only building.

    6
I try to use this editor because nothing happens, if i try to start the official editor...
    i have got windows 8.
How to make the the official map-editor work?

The best thing you can do as a level designer is to experiment yourself and get your own answers so you can familiarize yourself with the tools available to you, but since you mention that you can't get either editor to properly work, I'll answer what I can either way.

Most of these seem pretty self explanatory, though the organization is kind of funky actually. Why put the Treasury tile first then the Lair, then the Portal, followed by Hatchery, and then Dungeon Heart? Seems like a very random order.

    Left to right...

    For the "Other" section...
Edge of Map (essentially the same as impenetrable rock, but the normal game has these tiles to serve as a map's boarders), Impenetrable Rock, Rock, Dirt Path, Water, Lava, Gold, Gem, Hero Lair

The rest on the bottom row are just various Hero Gates. I don't remember which were which.

For the Neutral, Hero, Keeper 1, etc sections...
Top Row: Treasury, Lair, Portal, Hatchery, Dungeon Heart, Library, Training Room, Mana Vault
Bottom Row: Wooden Bridge, Prison, Torture Chamber, Guard Room, Workshop, Temple, Graveyard, Casino, Combat Pit, Stone Bridge

It will be an already destroyed Dungeon Heart, but neutral owned. Same thing if you place a Hero Heart. It is possible to give the Hearts health, so they don't start at 0% as they do by default, but the game crashes I believe if anyone attempts to attack the living Neutral / Hero Heart.

I actually do not know the answer to this. I remember having this problem before, but at the same time, I also remember getting DK2 Mapper to work. This was many years ago so I don't actually remember, once I got the official editor to work, I started using that as it's much more powerful and also easier to work with. What folder are they in? That might have something to do with it.

I do know that DK2 Mapper has some unique features on it. You can make a map as big as 500 x 500 where as the official editor is capped at 128, you can place edge of map tiles as the official editor won't allow you (admittedly this doesn't add much), and you can also place the special Hero Gate tiles that are used for the main menu when you first start up the game.

What folder is the editor.exe in? What other files do you have there?

I have Windows 8 myself and the editor works fine.

    you named a tile Mana-Vault.
Are this the holes in ground, where Mana-Energy comes out?

It should be Dungeon Keeper 2/data/editor. There, all of the editor files (official editor anyways) must be located. There's also the Graphics folder within the editor folder, which the editor uses.

Yes, they generate 100 mana for you. Mana Vault is the official name for them. Level 14 introduces them actually.

That's surprisingly normal. You're playing in 1.3 then, I presume? I don't know why but 1.3 (not sure if it applies to the other versions other than 1.7) has the icons screwed up by default. For the 1.7 version of the game, it is fixed. If you go to the Configuration setting at the top, you can adjust Terrain, Room, etc type information, which also includes editing the icon that appears in the editor.

After fixing the icons, you can save the map and save the global data with it as well. The global data is custom configuration data that effects only that map. Therefore, you will want to make sure it saves as it will preserve all the icon fixes, otherwise when you open up the map again, it will revert back to the default which is the screwed icons.

Since I already have a map at the ready with the icons fixed, I'll share it with you. Simply load up this map and load it's global data and it will fix the icons. Fixed Icons.zip

There are a few things to note, however.

As this fix only applies to the global data, you will have to load the map up every time you open the editor to reapply the fix. If you are loading a map that already has this fix within its own global data, you don't have to load the Fixed Icons map as whatever map you're loading will provide the same fix.

Sometimes, the editor doesn't properly update the rooms and terrain, so it will still look a bit messed up. To fix this, go to the Configuration settings for Rooms and Terrain. Don't change anything, just click Cancel or Ok. Simply loading up this window will get the editor to update itself.

Lastly, the terrain at the very edges will always be a bit glitchy. It's Impenetrable Rock, but at the same time, it uses an alternative Terrain Type, the Edge of Land thing I mentioned. You can't access it in the editor, meaning you can't fix the icon.

That's everything you need to know regarding the icons. It can be a bit annoying to deal with, but you'll get used to it. Personally I prefer having this issue than having to work with the 1.7 version of the game.

As a last bit of advice, save often. The editor can crash sometimes and there's no undo option either, so you will want something to fall back on.

You really shouldn't do that, 1.7 is a broken glitchy mess that introduces more problems than it fixes. And it entirely ruins the Keeper AI, making pretty much only Hero maps actually playable.
There is absoluetly nothing wrong with DK Mobile, whatsoever.

It's funny, when I tried DKII 1.7 with my patch, I got to Level 5 and fought Mikaelios. The Keeper AI isn't actually all that different, there is ultimately just one problem. It's the same one we all know, the AI cannot properly detect threat levels of units, which it uses to respond to enemy Creatures attacking their own Creatures. It's just that one error it seems, but it's so crippling. If only someone could figure out how to fix that within 1.7.

But yeah, like Skarok said, try to stay away from 1.7 if you can. While it tries to lure in new Players with shiny new content and the super sexy Maiden, it does have a lot of problems in itself. The crippled Keeper AI is the biggest thing, but there are also a lot of subtle things. Normal Creature AI seems to be funkier, for example.

If you still really want to get 1.7, you can download it here.
