Thread: How to make Dungeon Keeper 2 retail version 2 CD work ?

Thank you for your answer. As far as I noticed, even my warlocks didn't attack that magic door but maybe I'm wrong.

Horny made the game crash maybe because of the mess he triggers: many heroes attack him, so maybe the game shall crash in bigger maps with many creatures and Horny summoned, I don't know.

Yes, the behavior of imps in 1.5 seems better to me than in 1.7 I can eventually test a Windows 98 installation to see if that's better than Windows XP...

I think I misunderstood the aim of GimLite, then. I thought this patch made some adjustments in AI. As far as I remember, when I installed Gim (not Gimlite thus), creatures were attacking from far away than in original game. Am I wrong?

So there's nothing I can do to fix the dumb AI except playing with 1.5 which I prefer?

GIM is made up of bits of 1.7 and bits of 1.5, in order to try and deliver the best of both worlds. It comes bundled with map/balance changes. GIM lite is the same, but without those map/balance changes.

OK; so I'm not sure GimLite was correctly installed on my machine, since I saw no change with 1.7 GOG version... and since DKII.exe crashes at start.

    Here's what I have when I launch DKII.exe:

I cannot see any big difference, but DKII.exe doesn't start. I get a black screen, then back to the desktop. DKII-DX.exe works normally but I'm not sure GimLite is effective, as I said. Except the fact that the file is from 12/17/2013. I cannot remember if this comes from GOG or from GimLite.

Well... I'll make a try with Win98 on my old 32-bits machine

There is something I'm not sure to understand.

I installed GimLite to get only AI modifications but I didn't change any difference while playing the full solo campaign.

So I decided to install Gim to see the differences and there I go: imps become clever, creatures attack from far further than in normal game, and so on. So I get those modifications I was looking for. BUT the fact is that level are also modified, not in an uninteresting way, but level 11 is a mess: a 10-level salamander for the yellow Keeper, my own salamanders attack all the time because that yellow Keeper is too near...

So what could I do to get SOME of those modifications but not all of them? Is it possible by only choosing some of the files provided in Gim, or are the modifications in the DKII.exe?

Sorry if I'm not clear enough, English is not my mother tongue

    Thank you for your answers!

Ah, those are indeed the GIM balance changes. All changes are done on a per level basis, so you could pick and choose the levels from GIM you want, and take the levels from GIM Lite you don't like on GIM.
Beyond that, you can use the DK2 level editor to make modifications to levels yourself.

So the behavior of the creatures are only modified in files levelXVariables.kwd and so on?

Is it the same for AI (e.g. imps)?

Just want to be sure to understand, since I'm not a modder at all and I cannot open other files than levels by themselves.

I don't know much about DK2, but I believe so yes.

No, there is Globals kwd file as well, which is where most game balance changes would be in regards to GIM. Variables file contains some things as well in regards to game balance changes, as well as other things like availability, creature pools, keeper alliances. Some Keeper AI related info is in the Players file, but it's only configurable settings like what's available in the editor, it's not truly modifying the AI itself.

The AI I believe is in the exe so it can't really be modified, it's a packaged deal of Keeper and Imp AI with other things like having Elites, Skeletons coming out of the prison on their own, and that exclusive 1.51 Magic Door thing.

So if I'm right, I only have two possibilities: AI modified ON/OFF for each level by copying or not the right Globals.kld file.

I'll make a try for level 11 without Gim modifications since they make salamanders (and other creatures but lava blocks them) act from too far.

I have another question about conversion in the torture room. Creatures suffer stronger injuries while being tortured, so it becomes quiet annoying to manage: I cannot do anything else but heal those creatures really often and thus I have no time to manage my imps, defend my dungeon heart, and so on.

On the map Conversion (can't remember the level number but it's the level where a rival Keeper attacks with his vampires), I'm supposed to raise an army of converted monks to fight those vampires. I'm a bit afraid to be focused on my torture room while there is much to be done in this level (time is limited: the rival Keeper eventually attacks, whether I have monks or not).

Is this behavior part of the LevelXGlobals.kld file too?

Bonus question, any possibility to edit those Globals.kld with an editor, or is it in hexadecimal?

edit: OK I think I've found a solution, correct me if I'm wrong but I have to edit every level with DK2 Editor Pro:

    - Menu Configuration -> Modify Creature Types
    - select a creature (e.g. Goblin)
    - in the Attribute drop-down menu, select "Distance can see" entry
    - set it to less than 10 indicated in Gim (e.g. 6?)
    - do this for every creature type (including heroes and so on) and every campaign level
    - pray it will work

second edit: why, no, it won't work since values are the same between GOG version and Gim version. I must search elsewhere, but I don't know where...

No that won't work. You would have to play different versions of the game to get different AI.

Torturing captives is a thing of multi-tasking. Heal up your captives, then initiate a different task, and then come back to check on the captives. Having some die along the way isn't such an issue.

Editor as you seem to have already found will work. It can also be hex edited.

I don't know what you're trying to do. But Distance Can See will change how far away a creature will identify an enemy trap or creature and attack it.

For Global Data (stuff under Configuration in the editor), you also don't need to edit it for every file, but instead you can just open up all the levels you want and save them once you make the modifications on one level. When you load a map's global data into the editor, it'll maintain that global data and apply it to every map you have open in the editor. It's a double edged sword tho, as it can only maintain one set of global data at a time, so be mindful as to not open up a different undesired set of global data and overwrite what you currently have open. The editor needs to actually save the map before it attaches the global data to it.
