I've never seen an imp - mine or an enemy's - above level 1. Are they supposed to level up at all? I'm reading a strategy guide that refers to higher level imps.

Ha ha, thanks!
It seems that the imp's action is dependent on whether they are dropped next to a wall marked for digging, or claimable path, etc., if not then they start training.
Are there any other conditions - will they break away from training for any reason?
No. You put them in the TR, they stay there 'ti they reach level 10. They are not like hero Tunnellers who have (or had) a tendency to just wander off... though this may have been fixed in KFX.
However, Imps will not train of their own will. They do need to be dropped in the TR.
Although if you change this setting in rules.cfg
They'll gain experience for digging, fortifying and a few others things
; Experience imps gain from working
ImpWorkExperience = 0
It seems a bit unfair that the player can train imps while the AI keeper does not. Imp levelling through work would balance that without needing to fix the AI. I will give it a go.
It's useful in levels where you have plenty of time, like Level 14 Sleepiborough. Really handy to have imps that don't die instantly when they see a high level enemy.
Also, I found out that you can torture enemy imps to convert them, although if the keeper is still alive then it might be more useful to keep them in prison to keep their cost of imp replenishment high.
