Is there a way lower difficulty?

Not really no but you can use cheat. To do so on launcher there is run options, you can allow easter eggs that will then enable the cheat mode during gameplay. EDIT: then in game you press shift+enter to open a menu.

Or there is a Computer Assistent, the C-button next to your minimap helps you out too. That makes it easier to multitask.
But is there a specific map you struggle with, or is there more?
I also have the impression that KeeperFX is a bit harder than vanilla DK1, the AI is more aggressive.
Most noticeable on the og campaign's last level: With my CD copy the AI would always stay in its base, while in KeeperFX it takes over the central structure, and quite early into the game.
But I was playing the vanilla game without any patches, maybe that was the issue.
The vanilla without patch had the AI broken, several levels had the AI not doing anything at all, like not get a single creature or build a single room. With the patch, they became 'functional', still dumb.
In level 20 they would build their dungeon, accidentally breach their own wall and open up to the water. There they would then decide to start claiming from the blue tile that was placed east of the avatar prison, facing a huge amount of traps. This would kill their imps and give them vampires, until they would accidentally claim the neutral insects near the white heart, killing white and then making it easy to take over blue without traps.
KeeperFX made the AI build better dungeons, so it would no longer automatically open up into the water, never doing anything AT ALL because he had locked doors and not being a part of the level at all either. This was different and not good different, so I sat there with a timer how long it took in the original game (this is random based on their base building) to open up into the water, and averaged that out and now around that very time I unlock a door for them. Trying to give the player the exact same amount of time to go north as they had in DK gold.
I came back to this forum after years because i decided to play DK original campaign for once. I have never been struggling so much. Level 18 was impossible. I tried 8 times. I have played this game way too much. The AI is way more aggressive on claming gold which imbalanced some maps.
After playing a bit i notice these 3 things:
- Imps have the neurotic urge to bash down doors. I think the AI knows they can get a shortcut through enemy terrirtory and start bashing enemy doors which leads to uncontrolable situations.
- The AI keepers dig out all the gold 1-by-1. Regardsless. If they have gold in their treassure room or not. Wheter they have the infinite gems or not (which normally kep tthem at bay).
- The AI also randomly goes into assault beginnign of the game sometimes?
I might have been mistaken about the number but it had to have been the last few levels. I was crawling towards that beautiful castle of the Avatar.
